If you are evaluating NuGenesis as your laboratory’s primary LIMS — the system that manages all your samples, tests, methods, and compliance workflows — you are likely evaluating the wrong product. NuGenesis is primarily an SDMS (Scientific Data Management System) and ELN platform that sits alongside a traditional LIMS, not in place of one. Its SDK explicitly integrates with external LIMS products (LabWare, Chemware). Its most powerful use case is as the compliance-ready data archive and ELN for labs already running Waters Empower chromatography data system. If your lab uses Empower heavily, NuGenesis is the natural next layer. If your lab does not use Empower and needs a primary LIMS, other vendors in this series serve that need more directly.

Waters NuGenesis is a laboratory information management platform that combines a Scientific Data Management System (SDMS), an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN), and a Sample Management layer into what Waters calls a Lab Management System (LMS). The platform is developed and supported by Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT), a global leader in analytical instruments and software headquartered in Milford, Massachusetts. Waters was founded in 1958 by James Logan Waters and is known for Empower chromatography data system, MassLynx mass spectrometry software, ACQUITY UPLC and HPLC systems, and the NuGenesis LMS. FY2024 revenue: $2,958 million. Approximately 7,600 employees operating in 35 countries (Waters FY2024 press release).

NuGenesis SDMS has been adopted by “hundrends of companies around the world” (waters.com/nugenesis-sdms). The Sumble technology adoption platform identifies 153 organisations currently using NuGenesis (Sumble, April 2026). The platform is available in Japan via Waters Informatics Strategic Partner B-EN-G (Business Engineering Corporation), which publishes implementation templates and a dedicated September 2025 article on NuGenesis for the Japanese biopharma market — confirming active commercial presence in Asia. Named customers include BIOVECTRA, a biotech CDMO serving the pharma industry, which is featured in a waters.com webinar series on ongoing NuGenesis LMS implementation success.

Understanding Waters — and why NuGenesis exists

Waters Corporation has been a dominant force in analytical chemistry instrumentation for over 65 years, particularly in HPLC and UPLC separations and mass spectrometry. Its Empower Chromatography Data System is one of the most widely deployed CDS platforms in pharmaceutical QC globally, with deep regulatory acceptance. The challenge Empower creates is also what NuGenesis solves: Empower generates massive volumes of instrument data — chromatograms, spectra, processing methods, raw files, printouts — that must be securely archived, searchable, auditable, and accessible for years under 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11 requirements.

NuGenesis SDMS was built specifically to address this problem: automatically capture, index, and archive all data flowing out of Empower (and other instruments) into a compliant, searchable central repository without manual intervention. The NuGenesis LMS layer then adds ELN-style documentation, sample submission, results review, and stability testing workflow on top of that repository.

This origin is why NuGenesis is most accurately evaluated as “the informatics complement to Empower” rather than as a standalone LIMS. A lab running Empower as its CDS, with no SDMS, has uncontrolled data files sitting on instrument PCs, difficult to back up, audit, or search. NuGenesis SDMS solves that immediately. A lab with no Empower deployment evaluating a primary LIMS would typically look at STARLIMS, LabWare, or Thermo Fisher SampleManager rather than NuGenesis.

The Empower + NuGenesis stackThe most common NuGenesis deployment pattern, confirmed by the IntuitionLabs LIMS/SDMS guide and the Astrix global biopharma case study, is: Thermo Fisher SampleManager (or another LIMS) manages samples and test results. Waters Empower 3 controls HPLC and UPLC instruments and processes chromatographic data. Waters NuGenesis SDMS automatically archives all Empower data files, raw chromatograms, and printouts into a searchable, 21 CFR Part 11-compliant central repository. In this stack, NuGenesis is not replacing the LIMS — it is adding the SDMS layer that the LIMS cannot provide on its own.

Platform components — what each layer does

NuGenesis is best understood as a layered stack rather than a monolithic LIMS. Each component can be deployed independently or together:

1. NuGenesis SDMS — the foundation

The SDMS is the most widely adopted and most differentiated component of NuGenesis. It uses automated “file and print capture” technology to sweep instrument-generated data into a centralized, compliant repository without requiring scientists to manually transfer files. Data captured includes: print data (instrument-generated report content), raw instrument data (spectra, chromatograms, raw files), document files and printed reports from scientific and business applications, and Microsoft Windows and UNIX content. Data is automatically indexed by metadata including instrument type, experiment date, project, and custom attributes, making it immediately searchable.

Once archived, data can be searched using a single query across all databases, found in minutes rather than days compared to paper-based searches. Traceable hyperlinks are automatically embedded within data, so any item can be traced back to its source. Waters InSpector Software — a vendor-independent data viewer — is included, allowing any archived data to be viewed without the original instrument software.

The SDMS compliance feature set is comprehensive: 21 CFR Part 11-compliant electronic records, configurable and flexible electronic signatures, timestamped audit trails covering all user actions and data changes, version control with full revision history, long-term data retention and legal hold capabilities, and automated backup of Empower data. The 21 CFR Part 11 white paper from Waters describes the SDMS as designed so that “technical controls are inherent in any system used in a regulated environment.”

Why SDMS matters for Empower usersEvery HPLC, UPLC, or LC-MS run processed in Waters Empower generates raw data files, processed results, and printed reports. Without an SDMS, these files accumulate on instrument PCs and local servers, uncontrolled. They are difficult to search, difficult to back up systematically, and present a significant 21 CFR Part 11 compliance risk (data stored outside a validated system). NuGenesis SDMS eliminates this problem by automatically sweeping and archiving every file Empower generates, with no user action required. For a QC lab running 50+ HPLC sequences per day, this automation has immediate, concrete compliance value. This is NuGenesis’s most defensible advantage over alternative approaches.

2. NuGenesis LMS — the ELN and workflow layer

The LMS builds on the SDMS repository to provide an analytical ELN with workflow management. Scientists use the NuGenesis LMS to document experimental observations, control procedures, exchange information with other software, and search for and collaborate on scientific results. The ELN imports data directly from the SDMS repository, so instrument results are available within ELN documents without manual re-entry. The LMS functions confirmed on waters.com include:

  • Sample submission and results review: Submit samples from any internet-connected location. Capture and manage sample and result specifications. Assign samples to individuals or groups. View results in a configurable grid (SampleShare Data Viewer) combining sample, result, and submission data.
  • Scientific search: Query across single or multiple databases to locate data that would take hours or days to find in paper records.
  • Multi-vendor software connection: Import content from Empower, MassLynx, SAP, and other systems. The LMS integrates data from disparate sources into a unified ELN workflow.
  • Laboratory inventories: Manage consumables, reagents, and instruments. The out-of-the-box instrument management solution covers registration, maintenance scheduling, calibration, verification, and decommissioning. Reagent and solvent disposal management is also pre-packaged.
  • Data retention and legal hold: Long-term data retention policies with legal hold capabilities — data cannot be deleted or modified during a hold period.
  • Laboratory execution methods: Procedure execution and workflow enforcement to standardise laboratory operations.

3. NuGenesis Sample Management

A distinct module that allows scientists to track sample lifecycles, flag results against acceptance criteria, and manage the entire sample workload from a single interface. Key capability: remote sample submission from any internet-connected location, enabling scientists outside the lab to submit samples to QC for testing without being on-site. Acceptance criteria are configured per test, and the system automatically flags out-of-specification results for review.

4. NuGenesis Stability — the most differentiated module

Waters positions Stability as a major differentiator with an explicit market claim worth quoting: “Access a robust approach to stability testing previously only available to larger enterprises with complex LIMS solutions” (waters.com/nugenesis-stability). The module is designed specifically so that pharma labs can run compliant stability programmes without a traditional enterprise LIMS.

The NuGenesis Stability module provides: definition of stability study matrices (storage conditions, time points, test regimes); management and control of the stability inventory; automated pull schedule generation — NuGenesis calculates when samples need to be pulled from storage and notifies stability coordinators automatically; results management across all study conditions; shelf-life projection using built-in statistical tools aligned with ICH Q1 guidelines; single or pooled stability study analysis; and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant operation throughout.

The module is developed in accordance with GAMP5 and ICH guidelines and is described as a fully validated and tested software application. For small to mid-size pharmaceutical laboratories that cannot justify the cost of a full enterprise LIMS but run stability programmes as a regulatory requirement, this module represents genuine functional access to capabilities previously reserved for larger organisations.

5. NuGenesis Dashboards (v9.3+)

Introduced in version 9.3, the Dashboards feature provides out-of-the-box, non-editable dashboards for both SDMS and LMS. Dashboard types confirmed in the NuGenesis 9.3 white paper: System Compliance (flexible data source management and comprehensive system traceability), Process Statistics (file movement over defined time periods), System Usage (tracking remaining consumables, reagents, solvents, and expiry information), and Document Statistics (document and template usage). These dashboards give lab managers and QA directors a real-time view of system health and compliance posture without custom report development.

Deployment — on-premise only

This is the most important practical constraint for lab managers evaluating NuGenesis in 2026: NuGenesis is an on-premise system. Cloud deployment on AWS is explicitly not officially supported as of NuGenesis 9.4, per the Waters Knowledge Base article (WKB305387). The reason is directly tied to Microsoft Office licensing: the NuGenesis LMS Client and Document Creator Service both require Microsoft Office, and Microsoft’s October 2019 licensing terms restrict Office deployment on non-Azure cloud platforms in ways that create compliance complications.

What this means practically for lab managers:

  • NuGenesis requires a Windows Server installation in your own data centre or a validated private cloud infrastructure that your IT team manages.
  • There is no Waters-managed SaaS hosting option confirmed for NuGenesis. Labs that need a cloud-hosted LIMS/SDMS with Waters managing the infrastructure should engage Waters directly about current hosting options, as these may have evolved since the Knowledge Base article was published.
  • SDMS Web Vision — the browser-based interface introduced in recent versions — runs in Microsoft Edge or Chrome, providing browser access to the SDMS repository. However, the underlying server must still be hosted on-premise.
  • Labs already operating Windows Server infrastructure for Empower will find NuGenesis’s on-premise architecture familiar and manageable. Labs seeking cloud-first, managed SaaS will need to look at other vendors.
Cloud deployment noteThe Waters Knowledge Base article on AWS deployment (WKB305387) is a technical reference, not a product positioning statement. Waters may offer or plan private hosted options not documented in public KB articles. Lab managers should raise the cloud deployment question directly with Waters sales during evaluation, specifying: (1) whether a Waters-managed hosted option exists for NuGenesis; (2) whether Azure-based cloud deployment (which avoids the Microsoft Office licensing issue) is supported; and (3) the roadmap for cloud-native NuGenesis delivery. Do not assume on-premise-only based solely on existing KB documentation.

Compliance — the strongest signal for pharma labs

NuGenesis’s compliance depth is its most important feature for pharmaceutical and biopharma labs. The platform was designed from the ground up for regulated environments:

  • FDA 21 CFR Part 11: Full compliance confirmed across all NuGenesis product pages, the 21 CFR Part 11 white paper, and multiple regulatory-oriented materials. Features: timestamped electronic signatures, configurable audit trails, version control, data integrity controls, and automated archiving that eliminates manual file handling as a compliance risk.

  • GxP, cGMP, GLP: Confirmed on SDMS page and compliance white paper.

For pharma QA directors, the compliance signal most worth noting is the SDMS’s automated file and print capture. Compliance failures in 21 CFR Part 11 inspections frequently involve data files stored outside validated systems on instrument PCs. NuGenesis SDMS eliminates this risk category entirely by automatically sweeping those files into a validated repository, with no user action required and no opportunity for files to “miss” capture.

Integrations — built for the Waters ecosystem

NuGenesis’s integration story is coherent and deep within the Waters instrument and software ecosystem, and more limited outside it:

Native Waters integrations (the strongest)

  • Waters Empower CDS: The primary integration. NuGenesis SDMS automatically captures and archives all Empower-generated data — chromatograms, raw files, processed results, printouts — without user intervention. Enterprise system integrations

  • SAP (ERP): Bidirectional integration via NuGenesis Connectors. Confirmed on SDMS and LMS pages. Handles: test requests from SAP to NuGenesis, SOPs, product specifications, and test results returned to SAP.
  • LabWare LIMS and Chemware LIMS: SDK-based integration. The NuGenesis SDK connects NuGenesis to external LIMS systems — LabWare and Chemware are named explicitly on the Waters API page. This integration enables NuGenesis to serve as the SDMS layer alongside these dedicated LIMS platforms.

Multi-vendor data capture

NuGenesis SDMS is explicitly described as “application independent.” It can capture data from any instrument connected to a Windows PC: “Using automated ‘file and print capture’ technology, SDMS captures and stores the critical scientific data generated by any instrument or application” (SelectScience listing). This means Agilent HPLC data, Thermo GC data, Bruker NMR spectra, and other vendor outputs can all be archived in NuGenesis SDMS alongside Empower data. Waters InSpector provides vendor-independent viewing of any archived data without the original instrument software. Data can be converted to IUPAC JCAMP-DX format for vendor-neutral data exchange.

Named customers and user signals

NuGenesis’s customer base is documented across vendor and independent sources:

  • BIOVECTRA (named, confirmed): BIOVECTRA is a biotech CDMO serving the pharmaceutical industry. Waters.com features a webinar titled “Ongoing Success at BIOVECTRA Using NuGenesis LMS,” in which BIOVECTRA describes its NuGenesis LMS implementation. This is the most prominently featured named customer reference for NuGenesis LMS.
  • Anonymous biopharma (Waters SelectScience case study): A biopharma company implemented NuGenesis SDMS to control validated spreadsheets for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance. The company “dramatically improved their ability to control validated spreadsheets” using NuGenesis SDMS (SelectScience).

G2 signals, via Scispot’s competitor analysis (attributed as competitor-authored throughout): Verified G2 users describe NuGenesis as enterprise-focused. Key quotes attributed by Scispot from G2 verified reviews: “the cost that used for the development and maintenance is high”; “pricing can be a concern, especially for smaller labs”; “NuGenesis ELN leans more toward enterprise-level solutions, which may not be ideal for smaller research groups or individual scientists.” These signals are consistent with NuGenesis’s actual market position.

Pricing

Waters does not publish NuGenesis pricing publicly. All pricing is quote-based through Waters’ sales organisation or authorised partners. No pricing tiers or per-user rates are confirmed from any source. Implementation requires Waters professional services for installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification (OQ), billed separately from the software licence.

Independent signals (all competitor-authored or user-reported, attributed accordingly): G2 verified users cite high development and maintenance costs. The Scispot competitor analysis describes NuGenesis as enterprise-positioned with a procurement process requiring extensive sales engagement. The platform runs on Oracle database infrastructure and Windows Server, which implies meaningful infrastructure costs on top of software licencing.

Pricing approach for lab managersWhen requesting a Waters NuGenesis quote, specify: which components you need (SDMS only, SDMS + LMS, SDMS + LMS + Stability, full suite); your current Empower version and number of instrument connections; number of concurrent LMS users; on-premise server infrastructure or managed hosting requirements; validation services (IQ/OQ) timeline and cost; and ongoing support tier. Given that NuGenesis is typically deployed alongside Empower (which has its own licencing costs) and potentially alongside a separate LIMS, ensure the total informatics stack cost — across all systems — is budgeted before comparing against integrated LIMS alternatives.

Who NuGenesis is designed for

Based on the platform’s design, Waters’ own positioning, and the customer evidence available, the clearest fit for NuGenesis is:

  • Pharmaceutical and biopharma QC and analytical development labs that already use Waters Empower CDS as their primary chromatography data system and need a compliance-ready SDMS to archive, index, and make searchable all Empower-generated data under 21 CFR Part 11. This is the most natural and highest-value NuGenesis deployment.
  • Labs that run stability programmes as a regulatory requirement and want a purpose-built, ICH/GAMP5-compliant stability management solution without the cost and complexity of a full enterprise LIMS. NuGenesis Stability was explicitly designed to “make robust stability management capabilities accessible to any organisation” without a LIMS.
  • Multi-instrument analytical labs that generate data from multiple vendor instruments (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, ICP) and need a single, vendor-neutral repository for all instrument data. NuGenesis SDMS’s application-independent capture is the solution: any instrument, any OS, any format, all searchable in one place.
  • Organisations already running a LIMS (LabWare, Chemware, Thermo Fisher SampleManager) that need NuGenesis as the SDMS layer — archiving raw instrument data while the LIMS manages samples and test results. This is the “complementary” deployment model most consistent with how NuGenesis is architected.
  • Labs with on-premise IT infrastructure and established Windows Server environments that are comfortable with traditional enterprise software deployment models and do not need a cloud-hosted SaaS solution.
  • Labs operating in Japan, where B-EN-G provides dedicated Waters Informatics Strategic Partner support with implementation templates, CSV services, and Japanese-language resources.

NuGenesis is not the right primary choice for:

  • Labs that need a full LIMS as their primary system — sample registration, test request management, QC results entry, CoA generation, and batch release — without an existing LIMS alongside. For this requirement, STARLIMS, LabWare, Thermo Fisher SampleManager, or SciCord are built specifically for that role.
  • Labs that do not use Waters Empower and whose primary integration need is with Agilent ChemStation, OpenLab CDS, or Thermo Chromeleon. The native Empower integration is NuGenesis’s primary differentiator; without it, the SDMS is a general-purpose archive without a native instrument data source.
